Today sucked, (Saturday, August 17 7:30 AM to 8 PM, PCT mile 1871 – OST [(Oregon Skyline Trail] mile 15.9 = around 29 miles) my feet hurt so bad I almost wanted to cry but I had to keep walking. It’s both feet, but now my right one hurts the most – worse than before back near Wrightwood, but same area. I guess the shoes just aren’t working for my feet. I will just have to spend the dollars on new ones. I should just go back to my Montrail badrocks if I can find them online in my size. If not, the REI in Bend will have to work. I have to walk in them now for 80 more miles. Hopefully they make it… They will! Even if I’m in pain.
The second half of today was all painful. My feet hip, neck and back all were aggravated. And to top it off choosing the shorter lake-studded OST over the PCT was not the best choice. They failed to mention it’s a heavily used horse trail so the trail was worn and beaten and all loose sand minus the last 3 miles. I wanted to get to Diamond View Lake to camp and I did but it’s not that great — warm stagnant water that I can’t even wash in because the ground is soft sinking bog! And mosquitoes of course. But at least there is a view.
August 18 OST mile 15 to PCT mile1918 equals 12 miles, half day – 8 AM to 7 PM
Today was pretty good – hiked only 5 miles to Shelter Cove resort, a swanky cabin and Lodge and RV park on Odell Lake. Very pretty and hiker friendly. I got my resupply box of food there and luckily didn’t have to buy a single thing at the very expensive store. YAY! I was still experiencing some pain in my feet so I decided to take it easy and head over to the Willamette Pass ski resort next, to hit up the pizza parlor which is only open weekends. So of course I had to go. And it was a great place to hang out eat pizza sort my stuff on a table and get my phone charged all at once.
So I hung out there till 5 PM and hiked to the beautiful Rosary Lakes to camp even though I could have done more. But why? No rush when there are beautiful lakes where I could actually get in a bit and wash clothes and my feet. These volcanic lakes are totally different than granite ones. Soils are very soft and loose. Hopefully my feet get the rest they need. 75 miles To Sisters and Bend!
August 19, Monday 9 PM, mile 1918-1955 equals 27 miles 7 AM to 8 PM
My feet are still hurting pretty bad. 😦 All over dull achiness and sharp bone pains. Passed a couple of lakes that I cleaned my feet in, Charlton Lake for lunch-great spot! Stormy lake for dinner. Cool and breezy today. Ran into Spit Walker, Songbird and Banana Ripper. Camped with songbird and banana ripper. Walked past my planed stopping point to get to a campsite, and finally found a good one by a small pond — luckily not a lot of bugs. Overall felt fine today. Entered Three Sisters wilderness. Yay! Lots of forested lakes and some burned-out forest. Passed Maiden Peak ski hut in the morning, very nice shelter. Hiked alone. Camped at a small lake with Songbird and banana Ripper. Met south bounders Grapenuts and Nowhere Man, older gentlemen.
