Into the Sierra! From Tehachapi toward Walker Pass

6/1 Saturday Start 11:30 am Hwy 58 Tehachapi Pass mile 566   End 7:20 pm Golden Oaks Spring mile 583 Total mileage 17 miles

–  spring at end where we camped

–  camped w 10 other hikers!! crowded

–  spring very slow (quarter liter/minute)

–  hot but pretty day –  pinyon juniper woodland – awesome!

–  met up w/ Osprey and Someday (bro/sis duo) yay!

–  very heavy pack today! 6/2 Sunday

–  21 miles (mil 583 to 604)  7:30 am – 7 pm

–  one water stop at mile 602 – Robin bird Spring –  awesome, cold, fast flowing spring!

–  about 8 other hikers there at 6 pm, some camping –  hot day –  sweated tons – felt lazy

–  took a nap during lunch (one hour)

–  walked thru burned pinyons first half of day but still pretty

–  second half of day climbed back up into pines, 6000 feet

–  camped alone

–  very dirty today

6/3 Monday –  Got up late, started on trail at  7:45 am

–  knew today was going to be long, so tried to prepare mantally w/ more 5 minute breaks and only one hour for lunch

–  had to make 27 miles  today so that would only have 20 miles tomorrow to get to Walker Pass by evening to meet Frazier 🙂 [and heart sign!]

–  hard day for me

–  First half in pine forest (beautiful, soft pine needles to walk on)

–  just before lunch, the trail dropped down into a hot, dry, very exposed Mojave desert with no shade except some sparse shade under Joshua trees

–  water cache at Kelso Road, 12 miles in, had lots of water, but no shade!  Lots of hikers huddled under the only shade around for miles ~ 10 other hikers

–  stayed for one hour, ate lunch –  left at 2 pm ~ three hours of hot dry hiking!! NO shade

–  slowly climbed back into some pinyon pines

–  arrived at camp at 9 pm Today I tested my body and I think I passed!  I made it w/out dehydration or heat exhaustion and my feet didn’t ache that bad.  I even got a second wind after dinner (avocado, apple, almonds and chocolate)  It was way too windy to use the stove safely so that’s what I had to eat. [note from transcriber:  I’m guessing the next message should be direct from Jamie at Kennedy Meadows!! ??]

It’s been a while since I’ve commented…busy summer. Still read when I can. We’ve bought new backpacks, titanium cups and cookware…dropped about 15 lbs compared to our old gear 🙂 Leaving Sunday for San Francisco for a workshop and then Paul is joining me so we can hike a very small portion of the PCT. Can’t wait!!! Thanks for all of your info. Kind of wished we would run into you somewhere on the trail. We will be hiking northeast of San Fran during the week of June 23rd….haven’t yet decided where BUT I will be on the look out for you…..stay safe and…happy trails!

    • Sweet! Thanks Debra for reading and being interested. I am glad I have helped you on your gear choices 🙂 It really does pay off to have a lighter load. I know it doesn’t matter quite as much when you are just doing a short trip, but still, if you can save your feet and joints from ANY impact at all, you should.

I am getting back on the trail Monday morning, and doing 17-20 miles a day, so I have not figured out where I will be by July 4th, but hoping to be near Lake Tahoe… ??

Good luck and have fun! I wear a green shirt on the trail and a purple hat 🙂

Thanks! We’ll be looking for you. Green and Purple…add some gold color and a few beads and it almost sounds like Mardi Gras colors—sorry but Paul and I are originally from Louisiana…we love Mardi Gras 😉 We are going to be hiking in the Warren Lake and Clark Fork areas beginning on June 22nd. I’ll be wearing brown pants (not sure of the shirt ’cause I don’t know how cool/hot it is)…regardless–I’ll be looking for Miss Mardi Gras on the tail 😀

Hugs and get energized while your home ❤
        Debra
